Teaching and Preaching the Old Testament

Institute of Ministry Leadership

May 6 – June 24, 2025
Tuesdays 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Overview
This 8-week course (meeting 4 times) builds the skill of preaching and teaching from the Old Testament in today’s context. Students will learn core skills of preaching and teaching while also learning how to preach the Old Testament in a Jesus-centered way.

Learners engage with Grasping God’s Word: A Hands-On Approach to Reading, Interpreting, and Applying the Bible (2020) and Tim Keller’s Preaching: Communicating Faith in an Age of Skepticism (2016).

Intended Competencies
Our learning together in community aims to enable learners to:

      • Develop key strategies and practices for teaching and preaching Scripture well in a variety of ministry contexts.
      • Explain why we should teach and preach from the Old Testament, including understanding some of the challenges and pitfalls that can occur in doing so.
      • Understand how the various genres of the Old Testament should shape our teaching and preaching.
      • Effectively apply what was learned to teach (a lesson, Bible study, youth or children’s lesson, construct a worship service) or preach a sermon based on an Old Testament text or texts that integrates the strategies and practices of the course.
